Huawei MateBook X Pro 2021 Review: Is it worth waiting for?

The previous Huawei MateBook X Pro 2020 is all fair and good but the 2021 model is here. What does it have in store? Find out in this review.

Are you looking for a new laptop? While there are thousands of options in the market today, only a handful can actually deliver the rare combination of performance, superior design, durability, portability, and affordability. So, do you mind if we introduce something new?

Huawei, the Chinese manufacturer of affordable, high-end smartphones have something new in-store. It’s the new and improved version of the MateBook X Pro 2020. Of course, it’s the new 2021 model.

The Huawei MateBook X Pro received a lot of recognition when it was introduced in 2018. Unfortunately, the succeeding models didn’t bring enough significant changes. Likewise, their products weren’t easy to acquire in the US market.

However, the new MateBook X Pro 2021 comes with some pretty significant upgrades. Are you excited to know what this new laptop can do? It’s time to dig in a little deeper.

Design

The Huawei MateBook X Pro 2021 is available in two color options: space gray and emerald green. It weighs 2.93lbs and measures 0.57 x 11.97 x 8.54 inches. The laptop features a 13.3-inch screen, thin bezels, a 720p webcam hidden in the pop-up button in the keyboard, an innovative trackpad, a fingerprint reader, and two small speakers.

It’s a good thing that Huawei included a USB Type-A port in the left side of the MateBook X Pro 2021. It’s a significantly rare feat for a thin and lightweight laptop. Importantly, the laptop incorporates two USB-C ports with USB 4 and Thunderbolt support, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and up to 4K display with up to 60z resolution.

Additionally, this laptop showed excellent speed and connection results with its Bluetooth 5.1 and Wi-Fi 6.

Performance

First, it’s powered by a 10th Gen Core-i7 10510U CPU, a 16GB LPDDR3 RAM, Nvidia GeForce MX250 graphics, and up to 1TB SSD storage. With these specs, it can easily handle basic computing tasks including videoconferencing and web browsing. But that’s not all.

The MateBook X Pro 2021 laptop scored 5000 when tested with the PCMark 10 test. What does this mean? Anything above the 4,000 score shows impressive performance. With this in mind, any office-related tasks can be handled like a piece of cake.

It’s competitive. The truth is, it can handle image editing tasks using Adobe Creative Cloud and Photoshop. With photo editing, this laptop scored second to the Acer Swift 3X. Unfortunately, it will not work well if you’re into the more intensive games.

Another big let down is the short battery life. While the company claims it can deliver up to 10 hours of streaming video. On the other hand, our review showed only about nine and a half. This is after we disabled both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and the brightness was set to only fifty percent.

Conclusion

The Huawei MateBook X Pro 2021 is an average premium laptop. That’s because it didn’t provide remarkable changes. In fact, it falls behind its competitors. Also, the battery life and camera are essential in this age of remote learning and work-from-home brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Overall, the MateBook X Pro delivers inferior performance compared to other laptops with the same price range. If you really want the best value for your money, we suggest you opt for the Dell XPS-13.
